I occasionally subscribe to Ancestry intermittently (usually for a month at a time) to gain access to useful records, which I then download and save locally on my laptop (plus cloud backups). I guess that the key question is* what you want out of a genealogy website?* Personally I use several, each for different purposes. It's a small gesture but seriously, respect peoples' time & effort in helping you out. It's perfectly OK to ask for any info if you're looking for fresh leads, but you can help people to focus their efforts & look at the correct sources if you are more specific.
